Closet too thick? Wallet too thin? Here’s a helpful hobby for you to pickup that will solve both those problems: Poshmark.
Out of all the online reselling platforms, this one is my favorite. I’ve been selling on Poshmark since 2015 and it has its pros and cons but in all honesty, idk where I'd be without it. Its been a great way to make cash when I spend a little too much online or out in the real world when happy hour has turned into happy hourz. I won’t say exactly how much I’ve made over time but its more than you would expect. How much money you make from Poshmark, all depends on the type of items you sell, how active you are on the app, and the quality of your items. Take a look at my “closet” and peek my available listings.
Basically, if you sell nothing but luxury items (unless you got them at a discount) you’re mostly making back 50%-65% of what you paid for that LV bag. Which is great because your bag gets a new life, you get more closet space and money in your wallet for whatever you want. However if you head to Poshmark in search of luxe items at a discount, beware of luxury sellers that list a “luxury name brand” bag for an unbelievable price thats actually NOT believable. $250 for a Dior tote, is 1000% not the real deal. But Poshmark has a pretty good technique for booting off these scammers as well as those bots that comment “hi dear. this dress is so interesting! please email me at imtryingtotakeyourmoney @ gmail.com”. They also encourage their users to take time to look over listings (if you want, its not mandatory) and flag those that are replicas/fakes or transactions off Poshmark. That last one is something they absolutely don’t allow but people still do it. Circling back to this point in a sec…
This US based business with a little less than 8M users, recently expanded their Men, Women, Kids, and Home markets to Australia and Canada. Low key I wish you could buy from these international markets since all I get shown on my IG explore page lately is Australian fashion brands, but for right now you can only buy from other users in your country that support the app. There are other online platforms that support international reselling like Vestaire Co, Depop, and Ebay, but Posh isn’t one of them.
The reason I buy on Poshmark: is because I know I can always find something I’m looking for like a sold-out name brand swimsuit, a pretty maxi dress from a brand I can’t and won’t buy at sticker price, or a designer accessory that I don’t mind being gently used. I love finding deals, and don’t mind hunting for them on the app, while making sales of my own along the way. Seriously download the app use my code GTHESALEHUNTER to get $10 in site credit, and go find something that you normally would’ve overpaid for. You’ll help someone clean their closet and you’ll get a discounted clothing (that might still have tags on) and give it a new life. Everyone wins!
The Reason I sell: I touch on selling on different platforms in this post but, the reason I prefer selling on Posh is because of the network and it’s a happy medium of every other app. They don’t take the most for selling fees, they have an authentication process for items $500 or more, they’ll pay you if a package you bought or sold gets lost by USPS, and they keep the online community pretty well regulated. Once in awhile you have to block straight up rude people or low-ballers, but this place is surprisingly well moderated.
Wanna make an offer on something you like?
Here’s a great offer guide guaranteed to help you make a good call on what offers to accept and which ones to decline or counter offer, in addition to
avoiding pissing off other sellers with accidental lowball offers. You’re welcome.
People will occasionally send me lowball offers not knowing its rude, but other times they’ll know what they’re doing. When that happens to you, my advice is to stand firm on your listing price, or counteroffer with a price you’re comfortable selling the item for and NEVER cave on someone who offers you $25 for a dress you’ve listed at $250. WEIGHING THE PROS & CONS
CON: Pesky Posh fees! The one gripe I and everyone else on the platform has is the Poshmark selling fees. I (kind of) understand the reason the selling fees on The Real Real are so high. They inspect, model, shoot, list, and ship your items for you so of course they take 40%+ of the sale price. But Poshmark takes 20% of your sale, so always factor that into your items listing price.
PRO & CON: Opening Cases: This isn’t a bad con but it is annoying to go through as a seller. When someone opens a case on your sale, it’s usually because it’s not as described, fake, or it’s dirty. Basically the buyer states an issue with the item, takes pics and submits it to Poshmark’s customer service team to determine if this sale goes through or gets cancelled. Make sure the items you list are as described, clean, not damaged, and are what they say they are or Poshmark will 9 times out of 10, side with the buyer and send that item back to you. You’ll have to make a whole new listing too which is super not fun. On the other hand, if you bought something that isn’t as described, you can open a case and will most likely get your money back.
PRO & CON: Depending on if you’re the buyer or seller, the no returns thing is kinda annoying. I’ve had things I buy on there not fit and paid $100+ for them, which leaves me with the task of reselling- which they call reposhing (Reposhing an item means you bought it off Poshmark and are reselling it). However if you’re the seller, it doesn’t matter if an item you sold doesn’t fit the buyer, thats not a valid reason that can qualify a sale to be cancelled and returned to you.
PRO: Your orders are protected. When people try to get sales off Poshmark, you have to be careful. Some sellers just want to save that 20% Posh fee and will ship your item to you but here’s why you should just take that 20% L as a seller. When you’re ready to ship out your Posh order, they send you a prepaid mailing label, which is part of what that 20% Posh fee covers. If USPS loses this order, you get paid and the buyer gets refunded. If you buy offline and they ship however they want and the shipment never gets to you, you’re out all that money. Just stay on the app when buying things if you can’t afford to take a chance on people who want to pocket the selling fee.
PRO: You make can make friends! It sounds lame but it’s true. Like any other social networking app, this one lets you comment, share, follow and buy things from people who’s style you love. I’ve made many friends in line at sample sales and always get their Poshmark handles so we can stay in touch and possibly buy things from each other that we ended up having second thoughts about from the sales.
PRO: You can also trade with people who are willing to do it. If you find someone who’s up to swap/trade for a name brand dress thats a similar price that you’ve listed your boots at, go for it. To do this you have to coordinate with the other person and mark the item for $3 and title it “Reserved for USERNAME”. I’ve done it a handful of times and am always happy with what I trade for.
I love this app though but try it out for yourself and let me know what you think! Download the app, select gently used/clean pieces you’re not totally in love with anymore to sell as well as find some gently used pieces to swap in from other sellers. Also feel free to follow me and help me clean out my own closet. Happy Poshing!
