7 FALL TRENDS YOU CAN TOTALLY THRIFT

Save your money people. Zara, Amazon, H&M don’t deserve your money in return for cheaply made garments that will oh so quickly break down and last you exactly one season.

Hey hi hi hello. It’s been a minute. I’ve been juggling life, trying to stay sane, keep my business running with the help of me, myself, and I, and find the time to squeeze in a workout or two so I can look a little more snatched before my ten year reunion comes up and tests my anxiety. You know just the regular post covid (kind of) world.

I’ve been seeing TOO many publications (Who What Wear and The Zoe Report, Im looking at you) out here telling you what TrEnDy PiEcEs to shop on Amazon, Zara and HM. Gross. SO, Though I haven’t been able to post as regularly as I’d like, this issue got my fingers racing to the keyboard. Here are 7 Fall 2021 Trends (and classic staples in my opinion) that you can absolutely find while out thrifting IRL or online at Poshmark, Depop, or if you’re feeling fancy, The Real Real.

Chocolate Leather Pieces

Have I ever been a fan of darker hued pieces, no not really although I do have one section in my closet dedicated to Fall colors. I love the colorful pieces so much more. This trend was on my mind when I checked out a Crossroads on the westside, and perused their vintage section. Funny enough there was a VINTAGE SUEDE Ralph Lauren fringe jacket with discontinued buttons. And it was perfectly oversized. For $47 I found a $600+ on trend classic piece. To ever think it could’ve been tossed, shredded or put in a landfill blows my mind. Sell, donate or recycle your clothes people! You’ll never know who’s day it might make.

There are tons of dark chocolate colored jackets in both the mens and women’s section but all you have to do is look around. If you can’t, head online to Poshmark or Depop and lookup what vintage designer pieces you’d love to see hanging in your closet.

Fringe!

I looooooove a good fringe. Peter has outlawed bangs on my face (for now) but it’s hard to say no to a piece with fringe whenever I come across it while out thrifting. Truly I have found so many fringey things while looking for more clothes to fall in love with. And though I deeply wish I could buy them all, I don’t have that many rodeos or Gatsby parties to go to. In the past few years I’ve stuck to fringe lined vintage scarves that I can use as a skirt or top. Its hard to say no to the classic fringe jacket too which I have 3 of. Doesn’t everyone need a denim, black suede, and chocolate brown vintage fringe jacket?

Yes? No? Just me?

Colorful Knits

Thank God I do not have to go hunting for neutral knit sets this Fall. One, I don’t have the tan to pull that off right now and two, I have PLENTY of colorful sets and knit dresses that yes, have all been found out while thrifting. I’ve been trying to get into the ribbed bralette and matching cardigan set but every time I find one, I am, DISAPPOINTED.

I really love this FP Beach set that I found at the Santa Monica Crossroads last year actually. When they all opened up again I raced to each and every one once a week to see what people had decided to purge from their closets. If you’re heading online to find this, shop it here on Poshmark and here on Mercari.

The other ombre rainbow cardigan of my dreams was found at Siren Vintage at the Pickwick Vintage Fair in Burbank that happens each month. If you’re up for it, definitely check it out. There are all kinds of pieces and price ranges but you’ll always leave with something good!

Graphic Sweaters

Being in LA I don’t really need to buy any sweaters since its rarely cold outside, but to the racks I go anyway. The ones I like and see the most are old ones (in good condition) from Wildfox, Show Me Your Mumu, Verge Girl and more. I’ve bought several from each brand via Poshmark and Crossroads but fun fact, Wasteland has stopped taking Wildfox at their selling counter so thankfully, you’ll never find their iconically cozy graphic sweaters for much too much money. Their secondhand going rate has been slowly dwindling but I love their relaxed fit and sassy phrases. Clearly, that statement makes me a cheugy millennial right? Shopping will always be my cardio.

Stripes

I’ll keep this short and sweet because long long ago, I was a 13 year old obsessed with striped things that didn’t look at all flattering on me but I loaded up on them anyway. Though a striped cardigan might be triggering for me, I’ve learned that the larger the stripes are, the better it is for your body and makes styling the piece, so much easier. Here are a few picks I liked on Poshmark and suggest that you add to your cart quickly! Striped cardigans or dusters are so easy to find but take the time to have a good scroll until you make a cozy love connection, or two!

  1. Heres a boho one. 2. One by L’Agence. 3. A crochet moment. 4. And a classic Free People piece.

Bright Mini Dresses and Skirts

There are tons of people selling their party dresses that might have been perfect for a GNO in the Summer but are also perfect for Fall and Winter bashes. Just make sure they’re neutral or monochrome enough to pair well with whatever boots you have knocking around in your closet. When I wore this pink sequin mini, I debated wearing white cowboy boots with it but switched to platforms instead.

However I’m totally pulling it out again for Winter and Spring but paired with boots, heels and sneakers. It makes the cut of being considered a closet staple thanks to it being a muted pink tone, short, and features an open back. We love a party dress that does it all. If you’re on the hunt for it, its called the Cindi dress by NBD (a Revolve brand) , there are a few similar listings on Poshmark plus all the sequin options from NBD linked here!

If the racks don’t have the size or color or style you’re looking for, head to Poshmark and start your search there. Lately I’ve searched for “Sequin mini dress” “pink leather mini dress” and “metallic leather mini skirt”. I found one mini skirt for $15 that looks almost identical to the one Kacey Musgraves wore for her Simple Times music video. Hers was Versace and mine was Bar 3 but its how it looks on the outside that counts.

The other piece is a For Love & Lemons mini dress that I scooped up at a sample sale but if you’re in the market to rent it, Fashion Pass has it online and ready to rent now! Use my code GABY1C to get $15 your first rental month when you sign up!

Finally, Oversized Jackets

This is something thrift stores are known for. Search the women’s racks first, then the mens. Trust me. I’ve found good leather jackets that would fit a small guy but look oh so perfectly oversized on me. These are the gems we all hope to find and you totally can! This particular one is a custom vintage Levi’s jacket that I found at my favorite Crossroads spot. It’s very Summer but with some styling, this can totally be a funky statement piece to a neutral fall outfit too. If I could wear head to toe statement pieces I would but I haven’t completely lost my mind yet. Stay tuned.

Pro thrifter tips: if you can’t find any oversized jackets at you favorite local thrift store…

  1. Go check out the mens section if you haven’t yet. Just go look and see what you find ;)

  2. Don’t be afraid to try on stuff you find in the women’s section that might look like it’d be too big on you. See if you actually like it when it’s on, if not keep looking.

  3. Find the style name of a jacket by a brand you like, or even just look on the brand name section in Poshmark and scroll. You’ll find pieces in all types of styles, sizes and conditions. New with tags. Vintage. You name it. It’s all there. I know cause I’ve bought (and sold) a lot of things off Poshmark since 2015.

  4. Type in some general style like “leather Moto jacket” in the Poshmark search section. Then narrow it down by brand name in the brand selection. Scroll till you find the one.
